Fastweb Net Zero Carbon:
our commitment to 2035

At Fastweb, we believe that combating climate change requires a serious and constant commitment over time: since 2015, we have been purchasing 100% of our electricity from renewable sources and have set targets to reduce in 2030 our carbon footprint in line with the Paris Agreement, approved by the Science Based Targets initiative. As part of Swisscom group, our goal is to reduce our emissions by 90% and reach Net Zero Carbon by 2035.

The fight against climate change is one of the 17 objectives for a sustainable development (SDGs – Sustainable Development Goals) defined in 2015 by the United Nations with a 2030 target date, in order to ensure a sustainable future for our planet and for all of us. To combat climate change, it is necessary to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (e.g. carbon dioxide - CO2) resulting from human actions. To provide its contribution, Fastweb has set ambitious goals to reduce its carbon footprint in line with the Paris Climate Agreement, approved by the Science Based Target initiative (SBTi), and as part of the Swisscom group, has set the goal of reaching Net Zero Carbon by 2035.

Our contribution to emission reduction through offsetting

In addition to reducing its own emissions, Fastweb has decided to engage in an offsetting project to make an immediate concrete and tangible contribution to combating climate change. As of 2021, Fastweb has already offset all direct emissions and those related to the provision of services to customers. Since September 2022 we have also decided to offset the emission related to the use of our services. In fact, Fastweb also offsets residual emissions generated during the production, transportation, use and disposal of its products, at no extra charge. In this way, Fastweb customers also contribute to environmental protection.

Our emissions

The Carbon Footprint calculation is a measure of the amount of greenhouse gases, the main contributors to climate change, that are emitted by a company in a year of operation, and is expressed in tonnes of CO2 (carbon dioxide) equivalent. The calculation model developed in Fastweb includes:

  • Direct emissions (Scope 1)due to activities performed or controlled by the company (e.g. for the use of fuel for heating and transportation through company cars and pool cars)
  • Indirect energy emission (Scope 2), deriving from the purchase of electric power, which for Fastweb is equal to 0 since, already starting from 2015, we have been purchasing from renewable sources 100% of the electric power we need for our network infrastructure, in our offices and in the flagship stores under our management;
  • Other indirect emissions (Scope 3), generated by greenhouse gas sources that are not proprietary or are controlled by external subjects (e.g. supply chain, logistics, use of services by customers and management of products’ end of life).
Fastweb's carbon footprint calculation model is third-party certified according to the international standard UNI EN ISO 14064-1.

The increase in emissions started from 2020 is linked to the strong increase in demand for the provision of digital services during the health emergency period. At the same time, the increase in the use of remote working, videoconferencing and all digital services in general has made it possible to avoid the emission of more than 289,000 tonnes of CO2 in 2023 alone.

Our reduction targets

With a continuous growth of our network and services, in 2023, Fastweb updated its Science Based Targets Initiative targets in line with the increase of global temperature below 1.5°C:

  1. by 2030 we will reduce our direct and indirect energy emissions (Scope 1+2) by 64% compared to 2018;
  2. we will continue to purchase 100% of electric power (Scope 2) from renewable sources at least until 2030;
  3. by 2030, we will have reduced by 46% our indirect emissions (Scope 3) compared with 2018.

We will achieve our targets through several actions: we will involve our suppliers, we will adopt more efficient techniques for the laying of fibre, we will replace our car fleet with electric cars, we will eliminate our thermal power stations and we will also carry out several other initiatives involving all of Fastweb and its customers over the next two years.
Regarding long-term goals, the Swisscom group has set Net Zero Carbon objective by 2035 and has submitted its targets to SBTi.

International offset projects

In addition to these important goals, to contribute to environmental conservation, Fastweb has identified, in collaboration with AzzeroCO2 and Legambiente, ten international projects in India, Brazil, Nicaragua, Uganda, Vietnam and Mongolia that involve the reforestation and forest protection of certain areas, and the construction of energy production plants from renewable sources (wind, hydroelectric and photovoltaic).
